I hope you all had a spooky and treatful Halloween. There were fun and adorable trick or treaters at my door last night. I think my really scary Jack-o-lantern scared them away though or maybe it was my dog, Sophie. I am not sure. This Jack is the center block of my Halloween quilt made 2 years ago. The starry eyes are buttons.

"Suzani" means needlework in Central Asia. This design is from one of Kaffe Fassett's quilt books. The colors are rich and earthy like the natural dyes in that part of the world. For a little more detail I hand quilted the inside of the circles with a #6 perle cotton thread. I have fond memories of this quilt. I made it in a week during a trip to my friends, Marjorie and Harvey in Maine in the summer of 2006. Marjorie picked me up from the airport in Portland and we quickly drove to the sweet little town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Portsmouth Quilt Shop where I picked out almost all of the fabrics...at least all of the gold background fabrics and most of the solid shot cottons. During my visit Marjorie and I spent a lot of the time at our machines sewing and just catching up and doing what friends do. When she returned me to the airport the following week we made a second stop into to quilt shop because of course we might have needed more fabric. I pulled out the finished quilt top and they sales associates could not believe that only a week had passed. This may be the definition of obsessive but I would just call it good clean fun. This quilt now keeps me warm at night. It is by far one of my favorite. And I have great memories of that week with my friends in Maine. Oh by the way....The gold backing of the quilt top was completed before the circles were added to the top. The extra bulk was then cut out....and I just had to use the cut out circles for placemats. What can I say? I grew up in the 60s with parents who grew up during the Depression. I just can't waste anything.

French rose baby quilt

I went to Denver this weekend to see my girls and to go to a baby shower for my new Great niece due to come into this world November 11. I hope she will like this quilt I made to keep her warm. The pattern I used was French rose. It is a raw edge applique which means the edges are not sewn and will therefore softly fray the more it is loved and washed. It has a chennile piece in each rose making it even more soft. The border is a Kaffe Fassett design. I love the orange and pink and the big roses give it a very modern look.

Summer is here!

The June gloom is over and the sun is out for the summer. It is hot today but I love it!. This week I have moved the buffet out of the dining room and on the truck to Colorado. I have tidied up the room and painted the baseboards.
The fourth of July is only 6 days away. I hope you all have a fun day celebrating our country's freedom. I made this quilt 4 years ago. My favorite fabric is the Hawaiian red. This quilt hangs for the month of July every year.

My very first quilt. I have always been in awe of this traditional Hawaiian technique: two color, repetitive pattern and quilted in an echo pattern. I made this as a welcome banner for my new home in 2001. Now I am packing up this home and planning on moving to another. In addition my "messy room" is getting cleaned up and organized this week. I hope I don't have to change my blog name.

Leafy snowball quilt

A combination of fabrics, printed and woven , by Kaffe Fassett stitched together in a snowball pattern.  This quilt measures 90" by 70" and was completed in 2006

Pink Lemonaid..quilt for Regan's baby

This 40' by 40' baby quilt is a sweet little piece I made for my daughter's childhood friend's first child. Her neighborhood friends and their Mom's gave her a shower a princess would have loved.  We all had a good time painting onesies and sipping wine.  I hope this little quilt will keep this baby warm at night.

Raggy rose quilt

This was a fun quilt to make. I found the pattern in a magazine honoring breast cancer patients. The entire issue was themed around PINK. This was my take on the raggy pink rose. The background of the blocks is machine pieced. Each block flower is raw edge machine appliqued. What makes this quilt one of my favorites is the fabrics. I used all scrap fabric. There is at least one piece of cotton chenille in each rose. Did you know that chenille is French for caterpillar? We will be seeing a lot of those this month as spring is upon us in California

Happy Valentine's month! There are always lots of hearts, flowers and candies available the month of February. i decided to put mine on a quilt. This pattern is one of Karen Dumont's. I made it in 2006. I love the soft colors.

Pink & green quilt made from fat quarters of pastels and brights, many from Kaffe Fasset's collections. This quilt was made in 2005 in Beals, Maine. The muse was a hummingbird dining in my friends' (Marjorie & Harvey) garden in their fabulous home on Great Wass Island.

I made this quilt in 2006 from a pattern by Teri Christopherson of Black Mountain Quilts It has 460 pieces of machine appliqued petals, leaves & stamen.

This is one block of the Christmas quilt. The poinsettias are made from scraps of red, green & yellow cotton. The background is a collection of caramels. I could keep this quilt up all year.

This quilt is a good companion quilt to the rooster quilt. It is also a good size for the table. The design is also from Teri Christopherson and is a combination of applique and machine pieced. Some of the fabrics appear in both quilts. This one I made in 2005 but took more than 3 days
