Happy Halloween!

pumpkin, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

I hope you all have a spooky Halloween with lots of treats and no tricks. Last week Kate and I spent the day collecting pumpkins for Halloween and painting some of them the colors of the beach....shades of blue. I had seen a tutorial on Alisa Burke's blog and wanted to give it a try. Blue is a favorite color of mine and so I went with sky and ocean blue. The used some puffy fabric paint, including glow in the dark to decorate . I used inspiration from nature: leaves and the pattern of a sea urchin and sand dollar for my design. Kate and Ella painted along with me. It was a fun project. Try it next year! Next week: pumpkin pie!

BOO!

Halloween is such a fun time for decorating with spooky stuff. I decided to make spider T-shirts for my girls. I found some black shirts and then dug through my stash of felt and fabric for gray pieces that would make a good spider. Green felt eyes were perfect and then I found some old crystal raised buttons for the eyeballs. A touch of glam for my scary girls. The baby size shirt for Gabriela is embroidered spider webs with green beaded spiders in each web. If these adorable little scary girls trick or treat at your door, please don't be afraid; and give them a treat.
Happy Halloween!

In search of yellow leaves

yellow leaves, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

Today I was a leaf peeper! I went out southwest of Denver in search of yellow leaves.....that would be of the Aspen trees. This is my first opportunity to see them turn from their spring green to yellow. In my 20s and 30s I used to ski in the Rocky Mountains and would see these trees naked for winter standing only in their upright birch colored white bark with black and gray marks down the trunk. In the spring the gentle breezes will catch the leaves and make a lovely flapping sound. I found a really nice grove on an off highway road, parked the car, got out my chair and started to sketch. It was a great day to leaf peep!
