Sunday drive in the Rockies

Mt. Evans, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

Destination: Mt. Evans, one of the 56 "Fourteeners"-the mountains in the Rockies that are 14,000ft or more. Well above the tree line the road became VERY narrow and without any sides so I turned back about 10 miles from the top. Sophie and I stopped at Echo Lake for a hike on the way down. But the very best part of the day was the autumn color of the aspen along the way. What a beautiful day in Colorado!

Purple in the garden

French lavender, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

Summer is gone but my garden is still full of color. Today I am harvesting all of the lavender to save for making pillows and pincushions but come with me to see the rest of the purple flowers and veggies

First day of fall

fall, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

In Denver the morning is crisp and cool. Soon the sun will warm the day to 80 degrees. There will be 2 soccer games for me to attend and a USC football game to watch this afternoon. All the signs that fall is here. The leaves are turning up in the mountains and down here in Denver there is color too. I am sad that summer is over because I love it so much and I am terrified of W----- but today is a glorious day. Enjoy!

Yellow in the garden

Sunflower, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

It is the end of summer and most of the colorful flowers have faded but as I walked around my garden this evening I realized there is still a lot of YELLOW!...the color of sunshine which there also was plenty of today.
Enjoy the dog days!

Tomatoes anyone?

tomato and eggplant tart, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

How about a tart for dinner? A typical French tomato tart but with my own twist: a rough puree of prosciutto, olive oil and garlic goes over puff pastry. Then a layer of green zebra tomato slices and Japanese eggplant slices. A few sprinkles of olive oil, fresh thyme and a little Parmesan cheese. Into a hot oven. While it is cooling on a rack add a little fresh basil. Life is grand. Where's the wine?

A bounty harvest with lots of color. The gnarly dark red ones are heirloom Cherokee purples--the very best sliced and eaten plain. The yellow green are striped Zebras used on the above tart. The dark cherries are called chocolate cherry and are the sweetest cherry tomato I have ever tasted. I tried a new hybrid this year called indigo rose. it has purple black shoulders that have the same antioxidants (anthocyanins) that are in blueberries. They proved not to be as tasty as heirloom varieties but hold their shape well and made a delicious salsa. San Marzano plums are the very best meaty tomatoes for sauces.  Peaking through near the green Zebras are delicious grape tomatoes and the last variety is a red pear. I started all of these plants from seed and have had a ball watching them mature and ripen.

Reina is "5"!!!!

Reina, 5, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

The big girl in Seattle turned five yesterday and she had a great birthday party last weekend. Kimmy the clown came to the party and painted faces, did magic tricks and made balloon animals. We had delicious chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and were surrounded by animals as well as friends and family. Happy Birthday Reina!
Other fun things we did in Seattle last weekend: Blackberry picking, bookstore shopping, swimming lessons and cookie making plus just a whole lot of fun. The weather was perfect!
