Islands in a common sea

pelicans on La Jolla bluff

"How wonderful are islands!  Islands in space, like this one I have come to, ringed about by miles of water, linked by no bridges, no cables no telephones....The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains...One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now....I feel we are all islands ----in a common sea."
Anne Morrow Lindbergh,  "Gift from the sea"

Pelicans on the rock

IMG_0239, originally uploaded by cabanagirl.

I spotted a group of them perched on a rock. Many used it as a landing rock and then took off again. These guys are gorgeous! Remember my first post? Pelicans.

This is my first graffiti art quilt It was inspired by my teachers at the International Quilt Festival (July 2008) Traci Bautista and Lisa Engelbrecht. Lots of processes here. The base is a painted muslin. Then I collaged painted papers (including newsprint) and cloth. I then painted Mr. Pelican, wrote my message, then over painted, over stamped and stenciled and embellished with a vintage dandelion ribbon and vintage buttons. All of my art quilts have the ribbon, button and bead elements added. I just have to. I first did some pelican sketches and then took a big plunge to transfer it to the "poster". I am now looking for the perfect piece of driftwood to hang it by.
